Sri Lanka has long attracted travelers with its stunning landscapes and rich culture. But now, before you pack your bags, there’s an important new requirement: the Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization).
Starting 15 October 2025, Sri Lanka has made it mandatory for all foreign visitors to get an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the country. Travelers will no longer be able to apply for an ETA on arrival — it must be completed online in advance of the trip.
Learn what the Sri Lanka ETA is, who needs it, how to apply online, fees, validity, and travel tips for your next trip to Sri Lanka.
What is Sri Lanka ETA?
The Sri Lanka ETA is an online travel authorization that allows short stays for tourism, business, or transit purposes. It is electronically linked to your passport and replaces the need for a traditional visa for most short visits.
Once approved, the ETA lets you enter Sri Lanka and stay for up to 30 days, with the option to extend if needed.
Who needs Sri Lanka ETA?
All foreign travelers must apply for the ETA before entering Sri Lanka. The only exceptions are:
Citizens of Singapore, Maldives, and Seychelles
Diplomatic and official passport holders, based on specific agreements

If you’re visiting Sri Lanka for tourism, business meetings, or as a transit passenger, you must have an approved ETA before boarding your flight.
How to apply for your Sri Lanka ETA
Applying for your ETA is quick and simple:
Fill in your passport and travel details.
Pay the fee online.
Wait for your email approval.
You don’t need to print it; your ETA is automatically linked to your passport.
Sri Lanka ETA validity and duration
A Sri Lanka ETA is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
Once you enter Sri Lanka, you can stay up to 30 days, with an option to extend your stay (up to 6 months in total) through the Department of Immigration.

The Sri Lanka ETA is now required for most visitors, but applying online takes just a few minutes.
By securing your Sri Lanka ETA early, you’ll enjoy a smooth start to your Sri Lankan adventure — from the beaches of Mirissa to the tea hills of Kandy.
