To apply for British citizenship, you must meet the Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK (KoLL) requirement. This means proving your English language skills and passing the Life in the UK Test. Here’s everything you need to know.
KoLL requirement explained: What is required for British naturalisation?
You must show:
English language ability: Prove you can speak and understand English at B1 level or higher. From January 2026, migrants applying for major UK visa routes must prove B2-level English (equivalent to A-level standard) under the CEFR.
Life in the UK knowledge: Pass the Life in the UK Test about British culture, history, and laws.
If you already met these when getting Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you usually don’t need to do them again.
UK English language requirement
You can prove your English in one of these ways:
Pass an approved test (SELT) at B1, B2, C1 or C2 level.
Hold a degree taught in English, confirmed by UK ENIC if it’s from abroad.
If your degree was taught in English, you can use it as proof.
If it’s from outside the UK, you must get confirmation from UK ENIC (Ecctis) that it was taught in English.
Be from a majority English-speaking country (like the USA, Canada, or Australia). See full list here.
When you don’t need to take a test?
You’re exempt if:
You’re under 18 or over 65.
You have a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents you from taking the test (you’ll need medical proof).
You already met the English requirement when you got ILR.
